Malay Heritage Centre, Singapore
Housed in the former Istana Kampong Gelam, gazetted a National Monument of Singapore in 2015, the centre presents the history, culture and contributions of the Malay community within Singapore's wider multicultural story. It was officially opened by PM Lee Hsien Loong in June 2005, sited among the Istana, Gedung Kuning and the surrounding Kampong Gelam precinct.
The original Istana was a timber structure on stilts; in homage to that layout, visitors tour the permanent galleries starting on the upper level (panggung, the main living/sleeping quarters) and finish on the ground level (kolong, traditionally storage/work/play space). It is managed by Singapore's National Heritage Board in partnership with the Malay Heritage Foundation.
Permanent collections draw on Singapore's national collection and community contributions, focused on Kampong Gelam's history as a thriving port town before Raffles' 1819 arrival and on the Malay community's urban, cosmopolitan development since.
