Photographer Nick Út Donates "Napalm Girl" Photo and Camera to the Vietnamese Women's Museum

Nick Út, who retired in March 2017 after 51 years with the Associated Press, donated his iconic "Napalm Girl" photograph of Phan Thị Kim Phúc to the Vietnamese Women's Museum on 6 May 2017, marking 45 years since the 8 June 1972 photo was taken. He also gave the Nikkomat camera he used in Vietnam and four related photographs, including one showing him with Kim Phúc as she awaited medical help.

Út said he wanted the objects preserved for future generations, believing no place suited them better than the Women's Museum. The photograph, seen in Tokyo and New York within four hours of release, helped galvanize anti-war sentiment, won Út the 1973 Pulitzer Prize, and transformed Kim Phúc's life — she later became a UN Goodwill Ambassador for Peace and remains close to Út, whom she calls "Uncle." The museum displayed the donated items in its Great Hall through 18 May 2017 for International Museum Day, themed "Museum and History: Sharing untold stories in the museum."
