Sarawak Museum Department, Malaysia
Founded in 1860 by Charles Brooke, the Second Rajah of Sarawak, at the urging of naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace. A temporary museum opened at the Kuching market on 30 October 1886; the permanent building on its present site opened 4 August 1891.
The museum preserved Sarawakian identity and tradition through WWII and gained firmer footing after Sarawak joined Malaysia in 1963, earning international recognition as both a museum and a Borneo research centre — its Sarawak Museum Journal has been published annually since 1910. It holds the world's largest collection of Borneo flora and fauna and operates as a full department under Sarawak's Ministry of Tourism and Heritage.
Collections: zoological, archaeological, ethnological and archival material.
