State Museum of Oriental Art, Russian Federation
One of Russia's largest cultural-educational institutions, with permanent exhibitions on the art of China, Korea, Japan, Southeast Asia, Central Asia and Kazakhstan, the Caucasus, Tibet, Buryatiya, Mongolia, India and Iran, plus the Roerich family collections, alongside temporary shows of Russian and international artists.
It gained status as an educational research institution in 1977, with archaeological expeditions to Central Asia and the Caucasus a core early focus. A Department of History of Material Culture and Ancient Art, created January 1981, has run ongoing digs in the Northern Caucasus, Central Asia and Chukotka. The museum also runs conferences, seminars and lectures, including regular country-specific lectures for children.
Its main building, "The House of Lunins," dates to the early 19th century Russian Empire style and sits at the centre of Moscow.
