Museum Tekstil Jakarta, Indonesia

Founded in 1976 at the initiative of Jakarta Governor Ali Sadikin, honouring First Lady Tien Soeharto, who opened it on 28 June 1976. Traditional textiles have long been central to Indonesian dress, ritual and ceremony, and by the mid-1970s their production and understanding were visibly declining — prompting Jakarta's Himpunan Wastraprema (Society of Textile Lovers) to donate 500 high-quality textiles from members' collections, housed by the city in a historic building in Tanah Abang.

The museum regularly partners with private collectors and institutions on thematic shows (an ASEAN Textiles Exhibition, an Indonesian Textiles festival) paired with seminars and cultural performances.

Permanent collections: one of the world's most comprehensive collections of Indonesian textiles — warp and weft ikat, batik, embroidery, beadwork, appliqué, tapestry weaves and more from across the archipelago.
