Viet Nam and Finland: Museum Education Exchange

Vietnam Museum of Ethnology - Exchange

A project submitted by staff of the Helinä Rautavaara Museum (Espoo, Finland) and the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology (Hanoi) has been selected under the 2014 call of ASEMUS’ Educational Exchange and Outreach Programme.

Thanks to the grant provided by ASEMUS, Ilona Niinikangas, curator for education at the Helinä Rautavaara Museum, and Vũ Hồng Nhi, Vice Head of the Education Department at the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology, will be able to carry out a two-week visit at each other’s museum.

The aim of this exchange is to analyse and learn from their respective experiences in strategic planning, international partnerships and educational programming. In addition, they also plan to collect materials on folk toys and festivals in both countries and to conduct workshops with these items in each other’s museums. Both museums specialise in ethnology and ethnography.

Speaking of the project, Ilona Niinikangas has affirmed that:

“I would like to learn how the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology promotes cross-cultural understanding and diversity by linking the past and present as well as interpreting contemporary changes in society.”

Meanwhile, Vũ Hồng Nhi describes her motivation as follows:

“We really hope to share ideas and best practices on museum education. We hope that we will be able to work on a mobile exhibition together with the Helinä Rautavaara Museum in Finland.”

ASEMUS’ Educational Exchange and Outreach Programme enhances the professional development of museum educators in Asia and Europe and strengthens connections and cultural understanding between the two regions. The ASEMUS website contains information about previous exchanges.

A call for participation in 2015 is open until 15 September 2014.
