Stephane Martin is the President of musée du quai Branly, a museum situated in Paris dedicated to the art, cultures and civilisations of Africa, Asia, Oceania and the Americas. Over 300,000 works of art are housed within the architecturally trendsetting museum, whose construction was led by Stephane Martin while serving as Vice-President of Musée de l’Homme, des Arts et des Civilisations. Central amongst Martin’s concerns as quai Branly’s President has been the desire to heighten our awareness about the meaning of culture, and renewing consciousness towards intercultural exchange.
A former Chief of Staff to the French Minister of Culture, Martin has, over the course of the past 20 years, collaborated in some of France’s most venerable cultural arts institutions. He was Chief Representative at the Centre Georges-Pompidou and the Director of Music and Dance at the Ministry of Culture. Stephane Martin’s personal interests includes: contemporary classical music, Polynesian and African arts and culture. Martin is member and former Chair of the ASEMUS Executive Committee.
Martin’s views and vision for ASEMUS –
‘ASEMUS was very helpful in the creation of the musée du quai Branly, with the development of its exhibitions and the cooperation policies as well as the documentation of the collections. I’m convinced that the network gained strength due in part to the networking, the high quality of the interpersonal relationships, and the trust built between professionals and institutions. In the future, I do hope that Asian museums will be more involved and new active partners could carry the network forward and suggest additional activities.’
