Professional Development Course: Collections Care and Management

The Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) in London, UK, an ASEMUS member, is organising a professional development course entitled “Collections Care and Management“. It will take place in London on 25-29 November 2019. Registration is now open.

Delivered by V&A experts, this one-week intensive course provides a unique opportunity for museum professionals working in collection care and management from all over the world to meet and share knowledge. With a vast collection of over 2 million objects spanning over 5,000 years of art and design history, the V&A’s experienced team of collection managers, conservators and curators have developed outstanding expertise in caring for and managing the museum’s collections. A mixture of talks and hands-on workshops will provide practical tips and advice that participants can take away and apply to their own institution.

Course overview

This five-day programme will provide participants with a practical overview of exploration of the key aspects of caring for and managing their collections. Sessions include the life cycle of the museum object, developing collections policies, plans and procedures, due diligence and provenance research, copyright, conservation and preventive conservation, object handling and courier training and digitisation.

All teaching is delivered by experts from the V&A collections management and conservation teams, with a guest session by a leading external authority on copyright, and includes both talks and hands-on workshops to suit different styles of learning. Participants will also be invited to share real examples of projects from experiences working in different institutions.
