8th ASEMUS General Conference in Kuching, Malaysia - Registration open!

Themed "New Curatorial Perspectives for a Changed World," hosted by the Sarawak Museum at the Waterfront Hotel, Kuching, 14-16 November 2018, with a final day exploring Sarawak/Borneo's cultural and natural heritage, including a visit to the developing Sarawak Museum Campus.

The conference examined the curator's shifting role amid rising nationalism, more demanding audiences, digital transformation, and growing attention to ethics and provenance. Day one (14 Nov) offered five masterclasses for young professionals (exhibition development, scientific communication, curating with communities, digital/multimedia exhibitions, collections management). Day two (15 Nov) held three panels — "The Big Picture" (museums in transition), "The Ethics of Collecting," and "The Engaged Museum" — plus case studies. Day three (16 Nov) offered cultural excursions, with an optional Borneo rainforest trek on 17 November. Registration closed 1 November 2018. Organized by the Sarawak Museum Department and Sarawak's Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports, with ASEMUS and ASEF.
