The Asia-Europe Museum Network (ASEMUS) was founded in the year 2000 in Stockholm, at the Asia-Europe Conference on Museums, hosted by the National Museum of the World Culture in Sweden and the Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF).

In March 2001, a meeting was held in Seoul, hosted by the Korea Museum Association. The first meeting of the Executive Committee took place in October that year in Singapore, hosted by ASEF.

In April 2002, a conference entitled “The Museums as Market Place / Asia-Europe Marketplace of Museums” took place in Leiden, the Netherlands.
